How To Remove Paint Stains From Flooring, Furniture, And More

Home | Archives for | Page 2

How long before paint goes bad?

Removing paint can be a tricky task, especially if it is a delicate surface. When paint gets on surfaces that it wasn’t intended for, you will need special techniques that won’t damage the stained material or spread the paint stain. Here are our expert tips on removing paint stains from different surfaces.

Identify The Type Of Paint

Water-based, oil-based, and acrylic paints all have different bases, which means that they will react differently to cleaning methods. Most household paints are now water-based, but some can still contain oil. If you are looking to get out other craft paint or acrylic artist paint, there will be some tips included for those as well.

Once you have identified the base of your paint, you can determine what cleaners or tools you will need. Most water-based paints can be removed with warm soapy water and a cloth. Oil-based paints may need a chemical paint stripper for best results.

Removing Paint From Flooring

Flooring is one of the most common places where paint stains can occur. Even if you take every precaution to protect your flooring during a house painting project, mistakes can still happen.  Different types of flooring will need different removal methods, so let’s take a look at common flooring types below.

Hardwood Or Tile

Hard surfaces will make it easier to remove paint stains, but it is still a delicate process. While the paint is still wet, dab the area with a cloth or paper towel to get it off the flooring. Any smudges that are left behind can be cleaned up with warm, soapy water.

For dry paint, use warm soapy water and scrub the area to lift the paint. Once the paint is soft, it should come off easily. Use a scraper with a flat edge to remove any leftover scraps.

Carpet

Removing paint from carpet is more difficult than any other flooring type. When removing wet paint from carpet, it is important to remember to blot, not rub. Rubbing the paint will push it deeper into the carpet fibers and cause the stain to get bigger and bigger. Use a mild soap and a cloth to dab at the stain. For water-based paints, you can use white vinegar to help lift the paint from the fibers.

If the paint has dried, you can use a dull knife to scrape some of the dried paint flecks from the top of the carpet. Next, using rubbing alcohol or a commercial carpet cleaner, wet the area to lift the paint to the top of the carpeted floor. If the stain is stubborn, you may need to use steam to remove the color.

Paint Stains On Upholstered Furniture

Any fabric, including upholstery, rugs, or carpets, should be cleaned by blotting. For water-based paint, use warm water, vinegar, or rubbing alcohol to lift the paint stain. Mix the cleaner with some warm water and use a cloth to blot the stain until you see the paint begin to lift. This method works well for water-based wall paints and craft paints alike.

Oil-based paints that get onto your upholstered furniture may need a paint thinner or turpentine to remove the paint. When using these, make sure you test it on a non-visable area to see if it will damage the fabric. Dip a clean cloth in the thinner and dab the stained area until the paint comes to the surface.

Getting Paint Off Of Plastic

Paint stains on plastic may seem impossible to remove, but there is actually a trick to help remove stubborn paint from plastic: cooking oil. While warm water is often the key to removing paint, using cooking oil on plastic can help prevent discoloration. Olive oil or vegetable oil will soften the paint so you can scrub it off with a cloth.

Paint Stains On Glass

When you are painting around windows or painting a door with glass inserts, it is common to get a few spots of paint on the glass. Before you try to remove it, let the paint spots dry as it will be less messy to remove when it is completely dry. Paint splotches are easy to remove with a scraper once it is dry; just make sure not to scratch the glass or cut too deep.

Getting Paint Off Wallpaper

If you act fast, you can easily remove wet paint from wallpaper with blotting; however, if you are in the middle of a paint project, you may not notice small splatters until later. Once the paint has dried on the wallpaper, you will need to use a putty knife or a dull razor blade to carefully scrape the dried paint. If you don’t trust yourself to scrape, using a damp cloth with vinegar could make it easier to wipe off paint stains.

Pantone Color Of The Year

The Pantone Color of the Year selects a color to represent each year and promotes designers and homeowners alike to push the boundaries of design. They will select a color that fits the global mood and that can be used to nurture creativity for the upcoming year. In 2025, Pantone has chosen Pantone 17-1230 Mocha Mousse. This rich brown is one of the more neutral colors on the list of colors of the year, which may make it easier to include it in your home.

Including seasonal or trending colors in interior design is nothing new. Adding new pieces to your home that have trending colors is something that brings many people joy and boosts the visual appeal of a home. If you want to include the Pantone Color of the Year in your home, here are some tips to integrate it effectively.

Create An Accent Wall

The easiest way to include a Pantone Color in your home is to paint a surface inside the home. While some colors may not be as easy to blend with your flooring, other paint colors, or furniture, Mocha Mousse is a neutral option that will blend into most homes. This earthy tone on an accent wall will bring warmth into your home color palette. Once you paint your accent wall, you can find small decor pieces that compliment the warm undertone of the Pantone Color. Painting a wall with Mocha Mousse will make your space feel relaxed as it pairs well with other soothing colors like creams or ambers.

Upgrade Kitchen Appliances

Pots and pans, mixers, or utensils are used frequently so it is possible they are wearing out and need to be replaced. Bring the Pantone Color into your home by upgrading appliances to this color. While this is a more subtle move, including the color in your kitchen is one of the most affordable ways to mix in Mocha Mousse. Try tablecloths, placemats, or utensils to infuse your home with sophistication.

Choose Pantone Color Textiles

Pillows, throws, and rugs are a budget-friendly way to experiment with the Pantone Color of the Year. You won’t have to make a big commitment to the color and are able to layer these pieces with existing decor. Warm-colored neutrals are great for textiles because they are typically used to add depth and warmth to a room. Including Mocha Mousse in your textiles is a great way to get more use out of these pieces, because it will most likely flow well with a future Color of the Year. Many companies create specific products in the Pantone Color of the Year to help consumers integrate them into their daily lives.

Work The Color Into Multiple Rooms Of Your Home

Ways To Include The Pantone Color Of The Year In Your Home

Incorporating small pieces in multiple areas of the home will make the color look more intentional. Small vases, artwork, comforters, or DIY projects can all include Mocha Mousse to showcase this color in a personal way. No rule states you must include Mocha Mousse as a statement piece. While some homeowners may want to go bold, you can incorporate this special color by finding a textile with a multi-colored pattern, a single vase in your living room, or a decor piece that was created by your hand.

Find A Wallpaper With The Color Of The Year

Since many brands adopt the Color of the Year, you will be able to find wall coverings that include Mocha Mousse. Many wallpaper companies hire local artists to design patterns and design elements that homeowners will love. Even if you don’t find a company that specifically includes the Pantone Color, there are many wallpaper options that may turn to Mocha Mousse in the new year or a close version.

Adding wallpaper to your home that includes multiple colors makes it easier to implement your existing furniture. Many wallpapers include floral or greenery in the pattern, which means that Mocha Mousse won’t be the focal color. Often, wallpaper can be integrated more easily than a simple paint color because there will be many colors you can match.

Pros and cons of chalkboard paint

Choosing an interior paint color and type comes with many options. Many paints could work well for your home, but there may be a few that meet your unique needs perfectly. Chalkboard paint is a unique option that many homeowners overlook because it may feel more juvenile or useless than traditional paint.

Chalkboard paint now comes in many colors and can be used for creative or functional purposes. While chalkboard paint may not serve every room in your home, there may be small spaces or certain furniture that can be improved with this paint. This blog will share a few pros and cons of including chalkboards in different areas of a home.

Pro: Great For Accent Walls

Chalkboard paint can be applied to one wall in a children’s bedroom or on a small wall in a kitchen that may not serve any other purpose. Accent walls with chalkboard paint can be used to make lists, draw pictures, keep notes, or create a calendar. Using chalkboard paint for accent walls will save you time since it needs to be applied with precision.

Chalkboard paint can also come in other colors besides black, which makes it an even more appealing option for an accent wall. Black paint can have a shortening or shrinking effect on a room, so choosing a colored chalkboard paint will give you the best of both worlds.

Con: Needs To Be Applied To A Smooth Surface

If you have a textured wall or textured furniture, chalkboard paint won’t be very useful. A smooth writing surface is needed in order to write with chalk, so any wood or faux texture will not be the best for a chalkboard. This is also why applying chalkboard paint can take longer because it will need to be as smooth as possible. Avoiding bubbles or streaks is important for these surfaces.

Pro: Avoid Cleaning Off Childrens “Artwork” Off Other Walls

Homes with little children are at risk of having their drawings on their painted walls. Children may not understand the damage that crayons and markers can have on walls, so having a chalkboard wall can lower this risk. Chalkboard walls will give children a creative space for doodles, writing their names, or drawing with you. Chalk is easier to wipe off the chalkboard paint compared to scrubbing off other surfaces.

Con: Will Need Frequent Dusting

Not only will there be chalk dust to clean off the surrounding floors and walls, but dust can show up easily on black surfaces. If you choose black or a dark color chalkboard paint, you may have to dust frequently if you want it to look appealing. Compared to other surfaces in a home, chalkboards may need to be dusted at least twice as often, especially compared to hidden corners or top shelves that are rarely seen. Maintenance is even more important when using chalkboard paint in your home.

Pro: Can Be Used For More Than Just Walls

Chalkboard paint can be used on cabinets, furniture, walls, ceilings, and other accessories. If you are someone who loves to be creative, having different chalkboard surfaces in your home will help make your home feel more personal and allow you to change up the look with new chalk drawings or notes. Some popular places to add chalkboard paint include:

Textured paint finishes for homes in Utah
  • Cabinets or pantry doors
  • Fridge
  • Backsplash
  • Garages
  • Play tables
  • Small corners or odd-sized walls

Con: Not For Heavy Use Or High Traffic Areas

While most interior paints are durable, chalkboard paint does not hold up well to frequent scuffs, skin oils, or temperature fluctuations. Placing chalkboard paint in your home often means that you will need to repaint or touch up certain areas frequently. For homeowners with a busy life or different activities in their home, chalkboard paint may not be the best option for you.
